On March 14, Israeli troops stormed the Palestinian prison of Jericho, where
PFLP secretary general Ahmed Saadat and four other PFLP members were being held
for their alleged implication in the execution of Israeli Tourism Minister Zeevi
in 2001. Israel’s blatant and illegal act of aggression in Jericho has been
widely condemned. Saadat and his comrades are now political prisoners in the
hands of Israel. The Belgian weekly Solidaire may have been the last media outlet
to have interviewed Saadat before his capture by Israel. read

An additional 67 parties and organizations were unable to attend (among them several due to visa problems), sent a solidarity message or showed interest in the Seminar. read

The Central Committee of the Syrian Communist Party held its annual expanded
meeting on December 20th 2002. The meeting was chaired by comrade Wissal Farha
Bagdash, the General Secretary of the Party, and attended by the Central Committee
members, the members of the Party Supervision Committee, the secretaries of
the party regional committees and some specialized members. While considering
the political situations, the Central Committee said that the main aspect of
the world today is the continuation of the severe periodical economic crisis
and the increasing aggressiveness of the American imperialism as a result of
this crisis. read

NATO's existence was always defended by its founders on the grounds that it
was a "defensive alliance" against "the Soviet threat".
However, NATO was created in 1949 and the Warsaw Pact in 1955. Logically the
demise of the Soviet Union and the disbanding of the Warsaw Pact should have
led to NATO's dissolution. The opposite has happened. read

Defending the right to fight for liberation (saturday, 17 augustus 2002)
US imperialism, followed by their European allies, is attacking more and more national liberation movements and communist parties. On August 9, US Secretary of State Colin Powell added the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army to what is now a list of 34 so-called ‘foreign terrorist organizations’, which also includes the FARC (Colombia), the PFLP (Palestine) and the DHKP/C (Turkey). On August 19, the Slovak parliament is due to vote on the prohibition of communist propaganda. In other Eastern countries, such as Russia, Latvia and Poland, communist parties are equally faced with enhanced repression.
The Netherlands is now threatening to apply so-called ‘anti-terrorist’ measures, such as the freezing of bank accounts, on Filipino revolutionaries residing in the Dutch city of Utrecht. Among them is Jose Maria Sison, the chief political consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), the alliance of revolutionary organizations led by the CPP. On August 14, he gave a press conference on this issue. read

Today (June 27th, 2002), thousands of policemen and frontier constabulary invaded
Hashtnagar, the liberated area of the Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party (Communist
Workers Peasants Party). Their aim was to displace and eject the peasants of
Hashtnagar from their lands. The policemen and frontier constablary clashed
in a direct confrontation with the peasants and the conflict raged for more
than eight hours. Three policement are reported to have been injured. So far
there have been no reported injuries to peasants. read

Pakistan and India on the Precipice of War (wednesday, 5 juni 2002)
The threat of war is a stark reality. The British government has contacted British Airways in a bid to airlift hundreds of British citizens out of Pakistan and India as the two countries slide into a state of war. This is the largest evacuation organized by the British government since the Gulf War. Other governments are evacuating citizens as well. Both the governments of India and Pakistan are talking to each other from within their bunkers and staring down each other’s nuclear barrel. However, on the streets of Pakistan life goes on oblivious to the war clouds hanging over the sub-continent. read

address yesterday, President Musharraf has come out strongly against religious

movement swept West Bengal on 10th January 2002. Overcoming brutal repression
